Finding Strength Through the VA: One Veteran’s Journey to Better Health

For many veterans, navigating the world of post-service healthcare and benefits can feel overwhelming. But one Army veteran decided this year to take charge of his health and make the most of the resources available through the Minneapolis VA — and his story might just help others do the same.

After years of putting service before self, he made a commitment to invest in his own well-being. Through this journey, he uncovered several valuable programs and lessons that every veteran should know about.

🔬 Enrolling in VA Registries & Studies

He began by enrolling in multiple VA health registries, including the Burn Pit Registry and Depleted Uranium Registry (already participating in the Gulf War Registry). He also joined the SHADE Study, a VA-supported research program exploring the long-term health effects of deployment exposures. These studies don’t just help individual veterans—they contribute to medical research that can improve care for thousands of others.

⚙️ Streamlining VA Disability Claims

Like many veterans, he had experienced frustration with the claims process—especially when it came to service-connected injuries like his knee. On the advice of a fellow soldier now working with the VA, he reached out to REE Medical, a for-profit group that assists veterans in organizing and submitting claims. The result? His disability rating was updated within two weeks of submission.

🎓 Expanding Educational Benefits for Veterans & Families

One of the biggest surprises came from a 2024 Supreme Court decision known as the Rudisill Decision, which expanded GI Bill benefits for veterans with multiple periods of qualifying service. In his case, it meant an additional 12 months of education benefits—extending to a total of 48 months to help his two daughters through college.

💪 A Message for Fellow Veterans

His story is a reminder that help is out there — and sometimes all it takes is a little persistence to uncover it. Whether through registries, research studies, or educational programs, every step taken toward better health and awareness strengthen not only the individual veteran but the entire community.

At Hometown Hero Outdoors, we believe in supporting these kinds of journeys. Healing happens in many ways — sometimes on the water, sometimes in the woods, and sometimes through the courage to reach out for help.
