Doug's autobiography chronicles his military career spanning from 1996 to 2016. Throughout this period, duty and a profound family legacy shaped his journey. However, in 2003, during a mission, his truck struck an anti-tank landmine, resulting in severe injuries, including a Purple Heart, TBI, cervical spine surgery, burns, and more.

Following the incident, Doug struggled with inadequate mental health support, leading him to adopt unhealthy coping mechanisms, notably increased alcohol consumption. Despite these challenges, in 2007, he embarked on a journey toward healing. It involved leaving active duty to focus on his well-being and his role as a father.

Though he faced setbacks, Doug sought assistance from Operation Mend at UCLA and actively volunteered for veterans' organizations. Unfortunately, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated his TBI, prompting him to seek further treatment at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta.
