On November 16th, Hometown Hero Outdoors hosted two teams of veterans for a pheasant hunt at the stunning Milford Hills Hunt Club in Wisconsin. This event brought together individuals from across Wisconsin and North Dakota for a day of camaraderie, outdoor adventure, and connection, resulting in unforgettable memories for all participants.
Team 1: Breaking Barriers with an All-Female Team
The first team consisted of Julie B., Judy W., Teresa F., and Heather K., forming HHO's All-Female hunting team.
- Julie B., an Air Force veteran from North Dakota, traveled to Wisconsin with four of her expertly trained hunting dogs. Her dogs proved invaluable to the team, demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication.
- Judy W., a retired Marine, participated in her first-ever pheasant hunt. Reflecting on the experience, she shared:
“Thank you to Pheasants Forever and Charles Fischer for organizing this event and taking such good care of all the veterans. This is something I’ll be telling others about for a long time. Very rarely do I get to meet other women veterans.” - Heather K., a retired Army veteran, served as the guest lead for the event, gaining valuable insight into staff roles while working with the team. She expressed her appreciation, saying:
“We were a good team today. Thank you, Charlie, for introducing us!” - Theresa F., a Marine veteran, captured the essence of the event beautifully:
“Milford Hills is a beautiful facility, and I’m so appreciative that they hosted us. The therapeutic benefit of being outdoors with people who understand and accept you is priceless! This was a trip I won’t forget, and the ladies I spent the day with were rock stars!”
Team 2: Veterans Take the Field
The second team featured Dave F., Noah J., and Rob W., whose camaraderie and skills made the day unforgettable.
- Dave F., a retired Air Force and Navy member, reflected on the physical effort of the hunt, saying:
“My knees and hips are stiff and sore—a sign of a good day spent in the hunting field!” - Rob W., an Army veteran, expressed his gratitude and humor:
“Thank you, it was a great time and a pleasure meeting the other veterans. Fourteen out of twelve isn’t a bad day!” - Noah J., a Navy veteran, earned the nickname "Top Gun" for his impressive shooting skills, leading his team in harvested birds.
A Day to Remember
The day began with a hearty breakfast provided by John M. of Pheasants Forever, setting the tone for a meaningful and rewarding experience. Veterans representing various military branches connected through a shared love of the outdoors, leaving as friends despite starting the day as strangers.
Thank you to Pheasants Forever, Charles Fischer, and the Milford Hills Hunt Club for hosting this incredible event. Your efforts continue to provide therapeutic opportunities for our heroes, allowing them to connect, heal, and create memories that last a lifetime.
