For the fourth consecutive year, Hometown Hero Outdoors Team Minnesota returned to Whispering Winds Resort on Lake Vermilion for one of the organization’s most anticipated events of the year—Muskie Madness. Over the course of two separate trips, 15 veterans and first responders traveled to northern Minnesota to experience world-class muskie fishing, build lasting friendships, and enjoy the kind of fellowship that only the outdoors can provide.
Known as the “fish of 10,000 casts,” the muskellunge has earned a legendary reputation among anglers across North America. Lake Vermilion, with its rocky shorelines, expansive bays, and healthy muskie population, has long been recognized as one of the premier muskie fishing destinations in the country. While the pursuit of these incredible fish draws anglers from around the world, for Hometown Hero Outdoors, the destination has always represented something much greater than exceptional fishing.
This year’s trip carried a deeper meaning.
It marked the organization’s first return to Whispering Winds Resort following the passing of longtime guide, outdoorsman, and friend Jeremy Johnson. Jeremy believed deeply in the healing power of the outdoors and generously shared that belief with thousands of veterans, first responders, and visitors who passed through the resort over the years. His vision helped shape what Muskie Madness has become today—a place where strangers become friends, conversations happen naturally, and people leave carrying far more than memories of the fish they caught.
Although Jeremy was no longer waiting at the dock, his presence was impossible to miss.
Several of the veteran guides who spent years alongside Jeremy returned to volunteer their time once again, helping carry forward the tradition he helped build. Their willingness to continue serving those who have served was a powerful reminder that a person’s greatest legacy isn’t measured by how long they’re here, but by what continues because they were.
The fishing itself was outstanding.
Over several days on Lake Vermilion, every participant caught fish, and 11 of the 15 members landed muskies, an impressive accomplishment on one of Minnesota’s most challenging fisheries. By the end of the week, the group celebrated an incredible catch that included:
- 20 Muskies
- 12 Northern Pike
- 1 Walleye
- 1 Bass
While those numbers tell part of the story, they don’t tell the most important part.
The true success of Muskie Madness isn’t measured in inches or photographs.
It’s measured in the conversations shared while drifting across a quiet bay. It’s found in the laughter around the dinner table after a long day on the water. It’s the friendships that form between veterans and first responders who often discover they don’t need to explain what they’ve experienced because everyone around them already understands.
That is where healing begins.
The outdoors simply creates the opportunity.
Connection does the rest.
That philosophy has always been at the heart of Hometown Hero Outdoors, and it’s one Jeremy Johnson believed in wholeheartedly. Long before outdoor recreation became widely recognized as a tool for improving mental wellness, Jeremy understood that time on the water had a way of slowing life down just enough for people to reconnect—with themselves, with others, and with hope.
Events like Muskie Madness continue that mission today. Through guided fishing trips, hunting adventures, family events, and outdoor experiences across the country, Hometown Hero Outdoors provides veterans, active military service members, and first responders opportunities to strengthen relationships, improve mental wellness, and rediscover the sense of community that service often creates.

As another Muskie Madness comes to a close, one thing remains abundantly clear.
Jeremy Johnson’s greatest legacy isn’t found in the boats he launched, the fish he helped people catch, or even the resort he loved so dearly.
It’s found in every veteran who returns home carrying a little less weight than when they arrived.
It’s found in every first responder who discovers they aren’t alone.
It’s found in every guide who continues to give back because someone once did the same for them.
And it’s found every time Hometown Hero Outdoors returns to Lake Vermilion, knowing that while one remarkable man may no longer be there to greet them, the vision he inspired continues to change lives—one cast, one conversation, and one friendship at a time.
