This past weekend, the Hometown Hero Outdoors team traveled to Philadelphia to spend time with Officer Jonny Castro, our 2025 Person of the Year. What we captured during our time with Jonny is something truly special — and we can’t wait to share it with the world.
Jonny Castro is a U.S. Army veteran and Philadelphia Police officer, but his impact reaches far beyond the badge. Since 2016, Jonny has quietly created more than 2,400 hand-drawn memorial portraits honoring fallen service members, law enforcement officers, first responders, and K9s across the country. Each portrait is created at no cost to families, often delivered personally, and always done with one purpose: to honor sacrifice and help families heal.
During our time in Philadelphia, we had the opportunity to sit down with Jonny, learn about his life of service, and capture the heart behind Portraits of Valor. We filmed inside Philadelphia, spent time in his workspace, and followed the process that has touched thousands of families nationwide. What stood out most wasn’t just the artwork — it was Jonny’s humility, discipline, and unwavering commitment to honoring others.
This filming marks the beginning of a feature story that will be shared publicly later this year. Rather than telling the whole story now, we want to invite you to experience it the way it’s meant to be seen.
