Colorado Veterans Experience Ice Fishing Adventure at Blue Mesa Reservoir

Team Colorado recently hosted three members for a memorable ice fishing trip on February 1st in Gunnison, Colorado. The half-day guided experience, led by GSO Fishing, provided veterans with a scenic and productive day on the ice near Blue Mesa Reservoir. The group landed a total of 10 fish during the trip, making it a successful outing despite the shorter timeframe.

Two of the participants traveled from Prescott, Arizona to take part in the experience. For one member, it marked their very first time ice fishing, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day. The journey to Blue Mesa offered more than just fishing. Along the drive, the group spotted Colorado bighorn sheep, showcasing the natural beauty that makes Gunnison such a unique winter destination. With ideal weather conditions and calm winter skies, the setting created the perfect backdrop for connection, relaxation, and camaraderie on the ice.

Trips like this reflect the mission of Hometown Hero Outdoors—providing veterans, service members, and first responders with meaningful outdoor experiences that foster peer connection and support mental wellness. Whether landing a fish, witnessing wildlife, or simply sharing stories in a peaceful setting, these moments help strengthen bonds and create lasting memories.

Team Colorado is already preparing for another guided ice fishing trip in Gunnison on February 16, and the opportunity is currently live on the Hometown Hero Outdoors website for eligible members interested in participating. With continued support from partners like GSO Fishing and dedicated volunteers across the state, these outdoor experiences will continue to grow throughout Colorado.
