Hometown Hero Outdoors continued its mission of supporting veterans through outdoor recreation with a memorable weekend in Colorado, led by Colorado State Director Jimmy Felts in partnership with BBB Outfitters.
The weekend brought together four veterans for a full slate of outdoor activities, including goose hunting, clay shooting, and time on the long-gun range. The focus of the trip was simple but meaningful: creating space for veterans to unwind, reconnect, and enjoy time outdoors with others who understand the shared experience of service.
A Weekend Built on Connection and the Outdoors
Despite variable conditions, the group enjoyed a productive hunt and plenty of time honing their shooting skills. Several geese were harvested, dozens of clays were broken, and plenty of rounds were sent downrange during relaxed range sessions.
For Army veteran Jonathan Kirk, the weekend included a milestone moment — harvesting his first goose. Experiences like these are at the heart of Hometown Hero Outdoors’ mission, offering veterans opportunities to try something new while building confidence and camaraderie in a supportive environment.
More Than a Hunt
While the harvest and shooting were highlights, the true impact of the weekend came from the conversations, laughter, and shared time outdoors. Trips like this provide veterans with a chance to step away from daily stress, reconnect with nature, and strengthen bonds with fellow service members in an atmosphere that feels natural and unforced.
Community Support Makes It Possible
Hometown Hero Outdoors extends a special thank you to Big R for generously donating the clays and ammunition that helped make the weekend possible. Community partners play a critical role in ensuring these experiences remain accessible to veterans across the country.
Continuing the Mission
Outdoor experiences like this Colorado weekend reflect the core purpose of Hometown Hero Outdoors — supporting veterans through connection, purpose, and time spent in the outdoors. With the help of dedicated volunteers, partners, and sponsors, these trips continue to create lasting memories and meaningful moments for those who have served.
