Lake Dillion

On June 3rd through the 5th, Levi Clark, Joel Woodward, Maureen Holmes and Brett Yamashita joined Shawn Buckendahl on a guided trip, hosted by Amy Duncan with Big Eds Fishing Ventures, at Lake Dillon in Dillon, Colorado, in pursuit of Arctic Char.

Levi, Brett and Maureen joined Shawn at an out of the way camping spot Friday that we shared with a pair of Canada Geese and where brook trout were the target for the evening. The wind wasn't being overly cooperative but between gusts, some brookies were had. Dinner was chowed down and off to bed everyone went with a forcast for a very chilly night ahead at nearly 10,000' elevation where old man winter continues to maintain a slight grip.

Everyone drug themselves out of bed early Saturday to a balmy 26F and prepared for a day on the water. Amy was at the marina prepping for the day when we all arrived at 8 AM and after a quick safety briefing, we were off to find fish. The rainbow trout weren't shy in the least and were providing some entertainment until finally a small Brown Trout was caught and released. Tactics and location were changed up and everyone started hooking into more browns. About 11:30, restroom breaks were next up on the agenda so we returned to the marina as the winds started coming down off the mountains to the west. We sat in the marina for about an hour, fishing off the boat and eating lunch as we waited for the white caps to subside. We finally got our break about 1:30 and headed back out. The next 3 hours was non stop action catching so many nice sized browns that we were all willing to take breaks just to recover. We were all having so much fun that we forgot about this being a hunt for Arctic Char. About 5 pm Amy told us we were moving back across the lake to one of the inlets to finish up the day. The wind showed up with us, which made anchoring a pontoon boat almost impossible, even in the shallow water. The rainbows were more than willing to continue providing us entertainment. Finally, after 10 hours on the water, Levi scored a young Char! We were all very excited for him and considered the entire trip a success for all.

About 6:30, we called it a day and headed back to camp for dinner, relaxation, comradere and another guest visitor, Mr Fox. Dinner was downed and about 9 PM everyone turned in for some much needed rest.

Sunday morning brought us sunny skies and calm weather, which made it much more pleasant to eat breakfast in and easier to break camp. Finally about 11 AM everyone was loaded back up and ready to head for home.
